They sound like steps that may appeal to us. But is that what the Bible teaches us should be the focus of our lives on earth? Is it our goal on earth to stay positive in life and be looking for our best life in this world? It is the modern prosperity doctrine. Not one that focuses just on being materially rich (or prosperous) but on being visionaries and empowered people that overcome adversity and live for good words like happiness, leadership, health, and excellence to give us a good life now. In contrast to this is the Christian life that many of our greatest Christian leaders have found to be constant struggle and suffering in this world. Charles Spurgeon suffered greatly with depression; so did Martin Luther. Many were poor, many were sick, many imprisoned, and many martyred. Surely there was more to Christianity for these people than what they might enjoy or succeed in within this world.

Are Christians truly meant to be victors in every adversity, to be able to reshape our lives through a new and powerful personal control and to be able to know lifelong happiness in this world as a choice? Are modern popular teachers really correct when they say, "God desires to promote you into new levels of prosperity, and He wants you to begin to water the seeds you have sown. God wants you to prepare to prosper!"[49] A good percentage of the Christian living books in our bookstores are telling us that we should seek to prosper, materially or otherwise, or in some cases both, and that we should be looking for the benefits of these things in Christ now.
